The University of Chicago Appreciates Good Customer Service

A textbook store manager has a lot of critical tasks and responsibilities. Just ask Jason McCabe, Books Manager at the University of Chicago bookstore. So having a quality product backed by an experienced, knowledgeable customer support team is extremely important. And Jason has found that with XanEdu.

"My account representatives at XanEdu, Kevin Woodman and Donna Robbins, make my job so much easier," says McCabe. "Donna helps with all the ordering, re-ordering, and time-consuming administrative details of my account. And Kevin deals with the professors and school-related side of things. This takes so much work off my plate and frees me up to do other things.

"I became Books Manager two years ago, and quickly developed a good relationship with Donna and Kevin. They're always ready to help if there are any problems. They often find any mistakes and resolve them before anyone here even has a chance to notice them. For example, I may get a call saying that there is a blurry page in our latest course pack order. But the page has already been fixed and the new course packs have already been sent out.

"XanEdu produces a great product. And they're always on top of the latest innovations. We've really appreciated the copyright protection they provide where they include copy-proof pages in the course packs so course packs can't be copied and sold outside the bookstore.

McCabe continues, "I can always count on Donna and Kevin to work overtime to ensure that I get the course packs I ordered, exactly as I want them, in a timely manner. And now our course packs are already finished and stocked for next semester."

XanEdu staff understand that getting to know the quirks of faculty, programs, and bookstores is not only a key to strong customer service, but to strong relationships. "I value my relationship with Donna and Kevin," McCabe concludes, "because I know that they're working to make sure that I'm getting the highest-quality products and services available."

Copley Custom Textbooks and Quality Customer Service = A Winning Combination

XanEdu brings you the expert editorial services of Copley Custom Textbooks—publisher of quality custom texts since 1984. Copley Custom Textbooks lets faculty create their own textbooks, anthologies, or manuals with customized materials—quickly, easily, and affordably.

Instructors work hard to develop a unique course that's fully in tune with their students, their teaching style, and their research. And they want course materials that are relevant, concise, and in one convenient location—not a hodgepodge of textbooks, photocopies, and handouts. "Since 1989, we have created textbooks for our core humanities program," notes Peg Downs, Professor of Literature and Language at the University of North Carolina Ashville. "Without Copley's expertise, innovative vision, and remarkable cooperation, we could not have succeeded in this worthwhile venture."

With Copley Custom Textbooks, you'll experience the exceptional customer service you should expect from a custom publishing house. Copley can:

  • Provide complete copyright clearance services to ensure that all content is properly licensed. We offer a 100% copyright compliance guarantee.
  • Custom design a cover that reflects the author's institution, program, and course.
  • Paginate the text and typeset the table of contents, title page, and acknowledgement page.
  • Assign an ISBN and copyright the textbook in the author's or institution's name.
  • Format and proofread all original and reprinted material.
  • Typeset previously published materials using our state-of-the-art scanning capabilities.
  • Print, bind, and deliver the textbook to a campus or local bookstore on time—at no cost to the author.

"Each author or editor has a dedicated publishing consultant who works with them from the beginning to the end of a project," says Lucy Miskin, Publisher, Copley Custom Textbooks. "Our special focus on service and strong customer relationships is a prime reason we have so many long-term customers. And this is something we take a lot of pride in."

Whatever your requirements, our staff of experienced professionals will work with you every step of the way to provide the research, design, and production services necessary to publish a high-quality textbook.

A CoursePack is Born—From a Simple List of Articles to the Finished Product

It's delivered to your doorstep—fully bound, with an attractive cover, complete with all the articles you requested. Seems simple enough, right? But did you ever wonder what goes into creating that CoursePack? A lot of people have their hands on it before it's a complete package. So let's take a look at how CoursePacks come together, and begin...at the beginning.

Just the Basics
CoursePack requests come into XanEdu in a couple of different ways—directly from faculty or from bookstores—and they all require some basic information.

Background

  • What institution is this for?
  • What's the class title?
  • How many students in the class?

How Delivered?

  • Printed pack
  • Digital pack only (students have online access and can print articles from the computer)
  • Digital print pack (everything is copyright-cleared with digital and print copyrights – this gives more flexibility if a student doesn't want a hard copy)

Who will the CoursePack be sold to?

  • Bookstores
  • Institutions or departments
  • Directly from the e-commerce system to students (this gives students all three delivery options)

What XanEdu Does with Your Information
In addition to this basic information, XanEdu receives a title list from a professor or bookstore with the basic bibliographic information for the articles. Then it's time to check for copyright clearance. Some articles don't need copyright clearance:

  • Articles that are written by the instructors requesting the CoursePack
  • Pre-copyright-approved articles covered in agreements XanEdu has with Harvard and other case providers
  • Articles covered in publisher agreements giving XanEdu copyright permission

If the order doesn't come from a bookstore, once all the bibliographic information is gathered XanEdu notifies the bookstore about the upcoming CoursePack.

On to Copyright...
Even though some articles may be pre-approved for copyright, many still must be checked for copyright compliance. So...we move to the next step. When a CoursePack reaches the copyright clearance stage, a basic skeleton of the CoursePack is in place with all the citations and PDFs of readings. And there is a list of articles that still need copyright approval from article owners or their representatives.

Copyright Clearance Center—A System That Works
Obtaining copyright clearance for all those requested articles is a daunting task. Think of the phone calls, the paperwork, the follow-up. But XanEdu has a trusted partner in this complicated process – the Copyright Clearance Center. About ½ of the articles will go through the Copyright Clearance Center. If an article can't be cleared there, then XanEdu's experienced copyright team will research and identify the copyright holder, submit and follow up on permissions requests, and manage the royalty payment and tracking process.

Will I Get A Yes? And What Happens Next?
Most articles are easily copyright-approved. In the few cases that aren't, it's usually because too much of a book is requested and the number of pages must be reduced. Once an article is approved, it's marked in the system and any fees are noted. Then the job is printed, filed, and finished.

And So You Have It—A CoursePack is Born
CoursePacks from XanEdu are a convenient way to gather all the information wanted for a course in one professional package. What used to be a long, complicated job for professors is now a seamless, simple process.

XanEdu is working on ways to make CoursePacks even more accessible to users around the world by moving more from traditional printed CoursePacks to digital CoursePacks, and integrating CoursePacks into Blackboard. Be sure to talk to your account representatives about these and other new innovations.

So whether your job is to assign those readings or stock those CoursePacks, you can start thinking about your next CoursePack order and know that there's a talented team of people at XanEdu who are here to make your job easier.
