About this book

Crime and the Elderly is an academic exploration of the relationship between, age, aging and the impact of crime and victimization on the elderly. It employs data from various sources to draw attention to the effect of socialization processes on public reaction to the plight of our elderly citizens.

To do this, the book provides insight into elderly crime, criminalization, criminality and victimization, by incorporating an examination of factors that precipitate crime by, and victimization of the elderly. This is important because not only do we know very little about factors that precipitate elderly involvement in crime, but also we do not seem to be doing much to help our elderly citizens.

Old age is not regarded with reverence; instead we continue to admire youth and good health. We seem to forget that only the lucky ones amongst us will live long enough to attain old age. As a result, old age is feared and the elderly are often ignored and avoided. We thereby expose them to stressors that precipitate their involvement in crime or make them easy targets for victimization.

To drive the point home, the book undertakes a comprehensive discussion of the relationship between perception and reaction, because it explains why we continue to deny our elderly citizens the respect and reverence, which should be theirs by right.

A good knowledge of the issues and problems involved in aging is important because it will enable us to age gracefully, and avoid many of the pitfalls associated with age, aging and aged.

What they're saying about

Dr. Oli's third edition of Crime and the Elderly, is a powerful and masterful addition to the literature where there is an admitted paucity of data on the elderly and the Criminal Justice System. This is indeed an important and timely contribution."

Dr. Russell Mootry, Jr.
Dean, School of Social Sciences / Professor of Social Sciences
Bethune-Cookman College

"Dr. Sampson Oli's interdisciplinary blend of psychological, political, sociological, and criminological theories adds a unique richness to the comprehension of the impact of cognition on the plight of the elderly in a youth craved society. Crime and the Elderly, 3rd Edition is a must read for those wishing to understand both the variables leading to higher rates of crime among the elderly and the potential societal dangers of inappropriate perceptions of the aging process."

Dr. Dorcas E. McCoy

"Raised in a culture that reveres its elderly and their contributions, educated about their problems, and having done extensive field and academic research, Dr. Oli covers all of the relevant criminological issues from a straightforward, factual and analytic perspective. The book is an education, in itself, about a problem that we must start addressing, and soon!"
